On its anniversary, the plant celebrates the generation of 22 thousand direct and indirect job positions; social investments in excess of R$ 40 million; and the expansion of its high-tech steel portfolio
Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) celebrates its 13th anniversary on Friday, April 16, in a year that also represents the five-year mark of the start of operations, with the production of the first steel plate. Today, after 1,761 days of operation, 12.5 million tons of steel plates have already been produced.
Currently, the steelmaker accounts for 28% of the production of steel plates in Brazil. It also represents 50% of Ceará’s exports and 63% of cargo movements, including raw materials, equipment and exported products, at Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP).
Today, the steel produced at CSP is part of the culture of São Gonçalo do Amarante, in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza. Over these 13 years, Ceará has consolidated itself as a producer and exporter of high quality steel. This steel has already been exported to more than 23 countries, the main ones being: the United States, Mexico, South Korea, Turkey and the Czech Republic.
CSP is the only steelmaker in Brazil with the capacity to produce steel plates 300 mm thick, ideal for the shipbuilding industry, forming a portfolio with more than 200 types of plates. CSP’s product achieved Quality (ISO 9001), Environment (ISO 14001) and High Technology (International Automotive Task – IATF, Maxion Wheels, Siemens Gamesa, Caterpillar and Scania) certifications.
The president of CSP, Marcelo Botelho, emphasizes that the steelmaker is a new company that started the production of steel plates in June 2016, but whose trajectory already expresses the commitment to excellence. “CSP is one of the most modern steelmakers in Brazil and in the world, and we want to consolidate it as a reference in safety, quality, cost, technological and sustainable development in steel production. The challenges inherent to the sector are being overcome by CSP through innovation, investments in technology and successive improvements in all areas. The commitment to better performance is reflected in the certifications we have already achieved,” shares Marcelo Botelho.
GENERATING WEALTH FOR CEARÁ
Over 13 years, CSP has invested more than R$ 40 million in social responsibility programs, benefiting approximately 28 thousand people. This year, it is investing R$ 1.1 million in the 3rd cycle of the Entrepreneur Territory program, in partnership with the Support Service for Micro and Small Companies in the State of Ceará (Sebrae-CE), strengthening small businesses and promoting the sustainable development of the region.
22 thousand direct and indirect job positions were created. The city of São Gonçalo do Amarante registered gains in participation in the GDP of Ceará from 2002 to 2018, going from 0.26% and 2.91%. The study was released by the Institute of Economic Research and Strategy of Ceará (Ipece), in partnership with IBGE, in December 2020. According to the entity, the participation gains of the cities were largely due to CIPP and the installation of CSP.
