We were honored for the construction of the Germoplasm Bank of the Botanical State Park of Ceará, in Caucaia
Have you ever visited the Botanical State Park, in Caucaia? The Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) was part of the history of this conservation unit, which completed 25 years. The company was honored by the State Department of Environment (SEMA), this July, with the commendation “Friends of the Botanical Park”, in recognition of CSP’s support in the construction of the Germplasm Bank (seed laboratory) in the conservation unit in 2013. Today, the Park also has toys, ecological trails, a library, an outdoor gym, a nursery, and a meliponary (collection of hives of stingless bees).
Leonardo Veloso, CSP’s Environment Coordinator, represented the steelmaker when he received the “Friends of the Botanical Park” trophy and celebrated everyone’s efforts for the region’s environmental preservation. “This is in CSP’s DNA. Since its foundation, CSP has always sought partnerships with public authorities so that these actions would bear fruit and have the capacity to multiply. And this was a great example of how it is possible to effectively help the environment. The germplasm bank was donated by CSP and is a complex piece of equipment. It can be used for research, the recovery of degraded areas and the rapid production of seedlings. This is very gratifying and a source of pride for the whole CSP”, highlighted the manager.
The germplasm is a specialized laboratory for storing seeds for research improvement purposes. The equipment was created after the implementation of CSP’s Reforestation Program, which delivered 412 hectares (ha) of reforested area and 320 thousand seedlings of 90 native species planted, including the endangered Gonçalo-alves plant. “All of them were catalogued. We identified the parent species, which came from our seed bank to produce the seedlings. From these seedlings, we guarantee the maintenance of the same genetics for the preservation of the local biodiversity. Based on this work, the steel mill funded the 1st Native Species Seed Bank of Ceará”, detailed Ramyro Batista, CSP’s Environment Analyst.
Commitment to planting and caring
In this year of 2022, CSP is also celebrating 10 years of its Reforestation Program. As a result of this work, CSP was the first company in Ceará to receive the certification of forest replacement from SEMACE (State Environment Superintendence).
The company also continues to make progress in the expansion of the Green Barrier that “embraces” the plant. The action was designed as an environmental protection device in 2012 and, since then, it has been adding several benefits to those who work at CSP and live nearby. The expansion of CSP’s green barriers received 1,308 new seedlings in 2021. Throughout 2022, more than 8,000 seedlings will be planted. The belt acts as a barrier, reducing wind speed and absorbing pollutants from the air.
